August 2, 2007) — Late-game leads haven't been kind to the Rochester Junior Rhinos U16 Elite girls soccer team.

So when Veronica Santiago drilled home a 22-yard shot into the upper post three minutes into the second overtime of the U.S. Club Soccer National Championship game, the team couldn't be blamed for feeling uneasy.

Sarah Henderson erased any doubts with a goal off a corner kick three minutes later to seal the win as the Junior Rhinos defeated the Arsenal/World Class Hawks (New Jersey) 2-0 to take home the championship in the Super Group Tuesday night at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C.

"It was a big goal for us," Santiago, an Aquinas junior, said by phone of her goal that snapped a scoreless tie in the team's final game of the season. "I took a couple of dribbles, got into position and hit it to the far upper-post. There was no way the goalie was going to stop it. At first I didn't think it was going in because my angle was way off, but the ball bent into the upper post and I was really surprised it went in."

The Junior Rhinos team led 2-0 in each of its first two round-robin games, only to surrender the lead en route to a pair of ties.

Breanna Maggio (Wayne) stopped four shots and the defense effectively limited the Hawks' scoring chances to ensure there wouldn't be any late-game rally.

"We were getting frustrated with tying every single game, so once we got to overtime tied we tried that much harder and our intensity got that much higher," said Henderson, a junior at Aquinas. "We feel like we're one of the best teams throughout the entire country. What team wouldn't like that feeling?"

The Junior Rhinos defeated the CYSA Countryside Lightning Premier team (Florida) 4-0 to claim the Bracket 2 title of the round-robin portion of the tournament and reach the title game. Ashley Grove (Aquinas) scored three goals during the three round-robin games

The Rochester Junior Rhinos Girls U16 Elite captured the US Club Soccer Club Region E championship tournament held in Virginia Beach in early July.  The Junior Rhinos defeated  the Freestate Soccer Alliance Sharks from Maryland, by a score of 3-2 on July 3 to capture the regional championship.  Evelyn Santiago netted the game winning goal for the girls in the 75th minute.  The team travels to the U.S. Club National Championship in Greensboro, N.C,   held on July 28-31 .

The U16 girls team didn't allow a goal in the 3 preliminary round games and and came away with 2 convincing 4-0 wins against always tough CASL and Mt Lebanon.  The battled the Baltimore Bays to a scoreless tie, but  finished first in their bracket because the Bays had allowed 2 goals in other games.

"We moved the ball around well and played good defense," said Mary DeWitte, 16, a defender.  "We made sure they couldn't get many open shots and we created more opportunities for ourselves."
